Obama challenges the world

U.S President Barack Obama is on a crusade for the poor. He wants the gap between the rich and the poor in his country reduced.  This move is welcome not only for the citizens of the United States, but for the whole world.

There is a worrisome gap between the rich and the poor everywhere. In many countries, the rich have more than enough for themselves and much to throw away while some cannot afford the basics to live on. This is one of the injustices destroying the world.

Those who swim in wealth do not work harder than those who wallow in misery. In fact, it is the reverse. Those who work hardest reap the least from their work. Those who spend time enjoying live on the sweat of those who work hardest but are voiceless.

The world needs to do something not to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor, but to completely eliminate it.

Is it possible? Why should it not be? This gap has been created by us humans. We can also eliminate it.

What makes it difficult is our thinking which emanates from our education.

Our education has made us believe that it is normal for some people to swim in wealth while others perish in misery. Our education has built greed in our hearts and we want to be fine alone while others suffer.

There is a need for us to be a re-educated to see that the resources of the world are meant for everybody not for a few alone. We need to be re-educated to see the injustice in the way the resources of the world are distributed and do something about it.

It is comforting that the leader of the most powerful nation of the world has seen this injustice and is not only talking about it but is actually trying to do something about it. Although he is focusing on his country, if there is success here, it will, over the years, extend to other countries.

President Obama’s effort merits support. The U.S Republican House Speaker, John Boehner says the authority President Obama “has doesn’t add up to much for those without opportunity”.  This may be right if we go by the country’s Constitution. The question is: why can’t those who can do something about it do it? Why can’t they fight for those without opportunity? How will they escape being labeled as greedy if they do nothing and let the situation continue as it is.

I want to hail Mr. Obama for what he is doing for those without opportunity in his country.  It is a challenge to everyone of us in the world to fight for people without opportunity where we find ourselves.

I thus call on you to speak out loudly and clearly in favor of policies in your country and the world that close the gap between the rich and the poor.

You can start right here through your comment. Remember: anyone who is silent in the face of the wrong things going on in the world is an accomplice as far as that wrong ins concerned.
